Chiropractic

Chiropractic is a system of health care with an underlying principle that health problems can be prevented and treated using spinal adjustments in order to correct spinal dysfunction…

Chiropractors are experts at diagnosing and treating problems which lead to symptoms such as neck and back pain, sciatica, headaches, migraines, dizziness, and jaw pain. Chiropractors also treat sports and work related injuries.

Chiropractic and your nervous system

Your nervous system consists of your brain, spinal chord and millions of nerves which control every cell in your body. The nervous system is protected by your skull and the twenty-four vertebrae of the spine which have moving joints. When exposed to the stresses of daily work and leisure activities, these spinal joints often lose their normal function resulting in pain or ill health. Chiropractic specialises in correcting mechanical problems in the spine, relieving pain symptoms and improving the body’s overall well-being. We aim to prevent further problems by maintaining sound spinal health.

Safety and effectiveness

Chiropractic has an excellent safety record. Not only is chiropractic the treatment of choice for mechanical lower back pain, scientific research demonstrates it to be the most effective. Unlike medication and surgery, chiropractic assists the body to heal itself. It doesn’t just treat the symptoms.

Why do I need to have my spine checked?

Symptoms can be misleading when trying to assess your spinal health. Problems can often be tracked back to childhood trauma or an old injury. The earlier your spine is checked the greater the chance of minimising spinal degenerative change and achieving optimal spinal health.

Do I need x-rays?

This can only be determined on an individual basis. If x-rays are required, they are performed by Radiographers and reported on by medical Radiologists. These services are covered by Medicare.

What happens at my first Chiropractic visit?

A thorough history and comprehensive physical, orthopaedic and neurological examination is carried out. If x-rays are required, these will be arranged. The treatment usually commences at the first session. Everything is explained in detail to ensure full understanding of your problem and the prevention involved.

What if I have a work related or transport accident injury?

WorkCover, Comcare and the Transports Accident Commission (TAC) cover most of the cost of Chiropractic treatment. The TAC will require you to pay some initial costs. Private health funds also rebate a percentage of Chiropractic fees.

Chiropractic education

In Australia Chiropractors must complete a five-year university degree and a further 2,000 hours of supervised clinical training. They specialise in spine care. Chiropractic is the second largest health care profession in the world and continues to grow. A State Chiropractic Registration Board oversees the profession and registration is compulsory.
